Compost is so hot right now

And it's fermenting away in two big impromptu piles at Links Community Garden Lalor, so we'll have soil all ready for our brand new wicking beds. That's right, folks, new beds are a-coming, which means new plants are a-coming, which means new food is a-coming, which means ... read on to find out how you fit into this glorious cycle of Lalory gardenness.

Do you eat? Do you live in a dry climate?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then come and learn from Paul Gale Baker of Urban Shepherd all you need to know about dry climate edible gardening, including site and soil preparation, making microclimates, swales, mulching, wicking, and plant choice. Saturday 12th May from 9:30 -12:30 pm at Links Community Garden, Lalor. Free, but it's essential that you book by emailing linkscommunitygroup@gmail.com or phoning Matt on 0431 896 347. Sponsored by our pals at Sustainability Outreach Whittlesea.

And then sometimes the climate isn't so dry

As we discovered last week, when our fabulous wicking garden bed workshop had to be relocated because of gale-force winds and beating rain. Which didn't stop us screwing timber onto IBCs to make our fancy-schmantsy next generation wicking beds. We'll be filling 'em up with the good stuff this Saturday and starting to plant them out with some Winter veg, so come along from 10am to 405 Station St, Lalor. BYO gloves and whatever tools you've got. Big thanks to the Lalor and Thomastown Men's Shed, to Sustainability Outreach Whittlesea (and Cara), to everyone who came despite the weather, and especially to Matt and Ali for letting us use their space.

Germination, not germs

As we head towards the season of hankies, we're remembering that there are some things we don't want to grow at Links Community Garden, and that includes disease. If you have a highly infectious disease, whether it's the sniffles or the measles, please stay home and get well or contact your doctor. For your own sake and for the sake of our community.
